Hardwood Refinishing Timeline: What to Expect Day by Day
A sand-and-refinish job is less disruptive than a replacement, but it still takes rooms out of use. Here is a typical flow.
Day 1: prep and sanding
- Furniture out, doors and vents covered.
- Sanding in several passes, coarse to fine grit.
- Edges and corners done with an edger; dust contained with vacuum systems where available.
Day 2: stain (optional) and first coat
If you are changing color, ask for stain samples on your actual floor before committing. Stain needs to dry before finish goes on.
Days 2–4: finish coats
Most jobs use two to three coats. Water-based finishes dry faster with lower odor; oil-based finishes take longer and have stronger odor.
After the last coat
- Socks only for about a day, depending on the finish.
- Furniture back after a few days, with felt pads.
- Rugs often wait a couple of weeks while the finish fully cures.
Ask your contractor for the exact product and cure times in writing.
